The Joint Commission is warning providers that cases of improperly sterilized equipment have been rising steadily since 2009. About 74 percent of all “immediate threat to life” declarations made by the commission last year were directly related to such equipment. Last month, the commission issued an updated “Quick Safety” report to alert hospitals and ambulatory surgery providers. The report includes an expanded list of safety actions that should be followed “to address sterilization … and help protect patients from the transmission of disease and bacterial agents.”
